Member Highlight

The Professional Logging Contractors (PLC) of Maine was formed in 1995 to give independent logging contractors and sole proprietors a voice in a rapidly changing forest industry. In 2000, the PLC created the Maine Master Logger Certification Program to recognize skilled forest stewards under a third-party auditing process. In 2003, the PLC board of directors created The Trust to Conserve Northeast Forestlands (“The Trust”) to administer the Master Logger Program and to provide a mechanism for continuous improvement.

Area: Forests cover about 90% of the total area of Maine. Northern hardwoods (such as sugar maple, American beech, and yellow birch) and spruce-fir are the most common forest types. Other common forest types include aspen/white birch and white pine/red oak. Small private landowners own and manage a majority of the forested land in southern Maine while much of the northern part of the state is owned by relatively few large landowners.
