American Chestnut Foundation
The American Chestnut Foundation's goal is to restore the American chestnut to its native forests through breeding and research. Several northeastern states have local chapters of this organization. Find out more about the chestnut, which was wiped out by an Asian fungus in the early 1900's.

American Tree Farm System
The American Tree Farm System's goal is to reach the 9.9 million landowners who own more than 57% of the forested land in the United States. For more than 50 years, the American Tree Farm System has certified more than 70,000 Tree Farms and across the United States and recognized landowners for their commitment to sustainable forest management. To certify forest land, a forest owner must develop a forest management plan based on strict standards and guidelines and pass an inspection by one of 8,000 volunteer foresters. The American Tree Farm System is sponsored nationally by the American Forest Foundation

Appalachian Sustainable Development
Appalachian Sustainable Development is a not-for-profit organization working in 10 counties of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee seeking to improve the quality of forest practices on private lands and to encourage local processing of forest resources in order to add value and create jobs. Our Sustainable Forestry and Wood Products Program provides outreach, education, and technical assistance for the conservation and sustainable use of private forests; operates a solar- and wood waste-powered dry kiln; sells our Sustainable Woods lumber to regional manufacturers; and promotes the market for sustainably-produced forest products. Audubon Center of the North Woods
Founded in 1968, the Audubon Center is an environmental education sanctuary, located in Pine County, Minnesota. The Center features a dining hall and dormitory complex to accommodate large group meals and meetings. There is also an historic lodge, wildlife barn, bird banding center, a yurt, log cabin classroom, and a shack for the production of maple syrup. The site is located amid old-growth pines along the edge of cold, clear Grindstone Lake. Restored wetlands, a boardwalk and scenic hiking trails complete what is truly a beautiful place. An international, professional staff of educators makes the Audubon Center a special place to visit and learn.

The Government of Canada, through the Canadian Forest Service, launched Canada's Model Forest Program to address the challenge of balancing the extensive range of demands that we place on our forests today, and the needs of tomorrow's generations.

Edison Electric Institute

Forest Frontiers Initiative
The Forest Frontiers Initiative (FFI) is a five year, multi-disciplinary effort to promote stewardship in and around the world's last major frontier forests by influencing investment, policy, and public opinion. Forest History Society
The Forest History Society links the past to the future by identifying, collecting, preserving, interpreting, and disseminating information on the history of interactions between people, forests, and their related resources - timber, water, soil, forage, fish and wildlife, recreation, and scenic or spiritual values. The focus is from a North American perspective within a global context. Established in 1946 and incorporated as a nonprofit educational institution in 1955, the Forest History Society has grown steadily in response to increasing public concern about our forest heritage. Special Forest Products
A place to learn more about the use and markets for special forest products! Interest in non-timber forest products or special forest products (SFPs) is increasing rapidly. At present there are numerous efforts to increase awareness of these products, their management and market potential. However, there is a shortage of information available and there are few means effective in disseminating the information necessary for the sustainable management and marketing of these resources and products. The Virginia Tech Department of Wood Science and Forest Products, the USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station and the Top of the Ozarks RC&D in Missouri are collaborating to develop and operate the first web site devoted to gathering information on products and markets.
